Travelling Light for Low-Cost Airline Flights
Normally my hand luggage consists of a cabin suitcase and a backpack. I got IKEA's UPPTÄCKA cabin bag on wheels (now sold under the new name STARTTID); it doesn't have the best wheels nor is it the most versatile suitcase, but it's lightweight at 1.72 kg and cheap (bought mine for 25AUD), most important of all, it fits within most airlines' hand luggage size limit.
As for the backpack, it's a medium-sized Calvin Klein with multiple pockets and sleeves that are perfect for my laptop, chargers and travel documents, the only downside is that it's not too lightweight as the backpack itself weighs a kilo.
For my outbound journey, I would be taking three flights with two budget airlines without paying for any check-in luggage. The problem is that they have quite different rules for carry-on bag(s):
For Taipei⇢Berlin (via Singapore), I'm taking Scoot which allows one bigger bag plus one smaller handbag; total max weight 10 kg.
For Berlin⇢Gothenburg I'm flying with easyJet, and they allow only ONE bag but has no weight limit, so theoretically you can bring a bag of bricks or dumbbells onboard.... I later realised I could've paid 10€ more for an Extra Legroom seat and therefore be allowed bring along my backpack, but I've already checked in by that point and couldn't make any modification to the seat selection.
So that means I have to fit everything, including my backpack and laptop, into a cabin bag and keep it under/around 10 kg so that I would be allowed to travel on both airlines with only hand luggage. Here's what I've planned:
For my first leg of the trip (Taipei to Berlin) with Scoot, I'm bringing two bags and wearing a winter jacket. The two bag weigh around 10.5kg in total. However, it could be reduced by 800g if I put my chargers, power bank and passport sleeve in my jacket instead.
After arriving in Berlin, since it would be late European autumn, I'd take out and put on my winter accessories which take up 1/4 of the space in the cabin bag. While there's no hand luggage weight limit on easyJet, I can only bring one bag, hence I'll put my backpack and laptop in the space freed up by the winter clothes. At this point there's very little room so I'd have to empty the electronic accessories from the backpack for it to fit.
I'd stuff camera, power bank, travel documents etc into my jacket pockets as I'd be needing them during the trip anyway.
